Alzheimer Risk Reduced by Aspirin
New research published in the journal PLOS One suggests that salicylic acid, a byproduct of aspirin, prevents an enzyme GAPDH from entering and killing nerves cells causing Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s diseases.
Scientists in this current study also observed that a natural derivative of salicylic acid from the Chinese medical herb licorice and a lab-synthesized derivative bind to GAPDH more effectively than salicylic acid. Thus there are prospects for synthesizing more potent and effective treatments for preventing above neurodegenerative disorders.
